Wine Stains

Americans simply love wine. They drink when they are happy and they drink when they are sad. They drink when they are relaxing and they drink when they are stressed. They also drink when they have company or even when they are by themselves. Simply speaking, wine has been an important part of their lives.

But what happens when wine gets on the floor, your clothes, your tablecloth and your furniture? Well, you get a wine stain. This is one of the stains that are the hardest to remove. This is why a proper process for removing red wine stains is necessary. This way, you will know how to tackle the stain when accidents happen.

Before we begin with the process, here are the things that you need. First, you need a laundry detergent which will be used for the pre-treatment of the stained material. Hydrogen peroxide is also needed to loosen up the stain. Then there are materials like a sponge, paper towels and a towel or washcloth for blotting and the washing machine for final cleaning.

Now that you have the materials ready, let us begin the wine stain removal process.

First, blot the stain immediately. You can use white paper towels for the job. Remember to use only white. Colored paper towels tend to worsen the stain. After that, put towels on the front and back so that you can absorb the wine immediately. That way, it will not seep through and stain the back of the garment.

Next is to pre-treat the affected area. You can do this by combining a teaspoon of laundry detergent with a cup of hydrogen peroxide. Just dip the sponge in the solution and use it to blot the stain. Remember that you should squeeze it dry before using it for blotting. Pre-treatment can be done on machine-washable or ‘hand wash only’ garments. Pre-treatment cannot be done on ‘dry cleaning only’ garments. For these garments, all you can do is blot the stain and take it to the cleaners immediately.

After pre-treatment, you can now use your washing machine to clean machine-washable material. While washing, use cold water. It gets the stain out more. When you are done, let it dry. Remember that you can only do this to machine-washable material. ‘dry clean only’ materials have to go to the cleaners while ‘hand wash only’ materials have to be hand washed. To hand wash garments, use a mild detergent that will not irritate your skin. Take your time to remove the stain.

As you can see, it is quite difficult to remove wine stains. While it can be done, it still requires a little more time and effort compared with other types of stains. Wine stains are very sensitive that simple rubbing will get it to penetrate the material. It is with this reason that a proper process for removing red wine stains is important. If you know what to do, then you can immediately remove wine stains when you encounter them in the future.
